About the Teacher/Welcome Msg
Education
I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Memphis and a Masters of Education from Christian Brothers University.
Experience
I have been teaching since 2004. After teaching 2nd grade for ten years, I was given the opportunity to open a K-5 Science Lab at our school. Being a science "geek", this was something I couldn't pass up! I taught in the Science Lab for 4 years. August 2018 found me back in 5th Grade.
Bio
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Lori Umstattd, and I have been teaching since 2004. I am honored to have been selected as Teacher of the Year twice during my time at Southaven Elementary. I live in Southaven. I am also very active in the local animal rescue community and am a proud foster mom to an ever-changing group of 4-legged fur kids.
Suggested ELA Plan
30 min daily I-Ready Reading - students have individualized learning plans created specifically for them. I will be monitoring I-Ready progress to adjust and make changes as needed.
30 min daily independent reading - this can be digital or hard copies. If students have a library card, many many books are available for digital loans. Ask them questions about what they are reading to deepen understanding.
15 min daily journal writing
Possible topics
- have students journal about the current pandemic with COVID-19. They may write about about their experiences during this time, how they are staying busy, their feelings, how they are being affected
- narrative writing - write a story!
